Two students reinstated in Dublin school after expulsion for facebook remarks

Following on from my recent post earlier this summer http://wp.me/p2ptoI-n,  I thought it useful to share an update from the Irish Times today whereby two students (out of four students who were suspended) have been reinstated at Oatlands College in Dublin after being expelled for remarks made on Facebook about teachers at the school.Four fifth-year students were expelled in May by the board of management at the Stillorgan all-boys’ school after posting abusive sexual remarks about a male and a female teacher on the social networking site. It appears that the comments made by the reinstated students were less offensive than the other two students who must now find alternative schools. In April, more than 40 other students had been given detention on a Saturday morning after “liking” the offending material on the Facebook page. The appeals were heard before a committee that included a Department of Education inspector. The Department of Education stated “The appeals committees that heard the appeals in question are independent of the department and, as such, we are not in a position to comment on the results,” .
